Upcoming student exhibit: Phyllis Obst No Images? Click here Artist's statement “Can You See the Trees Through the Forest?” Nature has always been home to me. I grew up in a rural area where the forest was my playground. I was surrounded with things that fascinated me, such as the intricate pattern of fungus that grew on the trees, the leaf buds that developed throughout the year, the texture of the bark on the numerous types of trees, the intricate design of witches beard, the fuzzy soft pussy willows, and the perfect formation of pinecones. The list is endless. Later in life, when I moved to a more urban area, I would watch and admire the forests I drove past going to and from work, knowing that within these forests there were so many things one could not see, and some people never see. I realized that the mass of the forest is usually seen as a collective group, as one entity—even more so today, as the way of the world becomes more urbanized, populated, traveled, and distanced from nature. As I return to nature and experience the overwhelming presence of a forest around me, I feel and see all the parts around me working together to make this forest. With this project, I want to capture the immense and overpowering feeling of a forest, while also appreciating smaller detailed elements that can be found in it. Each illustration focuses on individual elements that can be found in a forest. Each element has been exaggerated in size, or cropped to a specific section, to enhance the appearances of these entities. The drawings are displayed in a manner that lets the viewer “walk through the forest,” allowing them to become part of the overall display. —Phyllis Obst, 2017 December 22, 2017 –January 17, 2018 Opening reception Sat, January 13, Location ART & DESIGN COURSESRegistration is open for the winter and spring terms. FEATURED COURSES EXART 3532—Abstract Painting I Make the shift from representational to abstract painting and gain an understanding of why and how artists create abstract works. In this course, we will examine how changing technologies in the 19th and 20th centuries have influenced the development of abstract art; experiment with other artists’ processes; discuss how to use colour, line, and texture to create rhythm and mood in abstract work; and examine how social movements and changing philosophies have influenced abstract art. Additionally, abstraction will be explored through the use of acrylic paint. Instructor: Samantha Walrod EXART 3003— Visual Art and Design I What do all types of visual art have in common? How do artists use the elements of art and design to develop and unify their artwork and ideas? Explore these questions and more in this introduction to art and design fundamentals. The characteristics of line, shape, texture, colour, and space are emphasized through examples, demonstrations, discussion, and practice problem-solving with exercises in pencil, pen and ink, collage, and acrylics. We will move through a wide range of materials, approaches, and concepts in art, beginning with exploration and moving into developing skills and techniques through a variety of projects. While largely hands-on, this course will also cover theory, research, and reflective practice, designed to build strong foundational knowledge and skills.
