NATO provides swift forest fire assistance to new Ally Montenegro

NATO Allies and partners are providing aircraft and helicopters to help Montenegro deal with forest fires in the Lustica peninsula. Montenegro approached NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) for assistance on Monday (17 July 2017), and the request was immediately circulated to NATO Allies and partners. A Ukrainian fire-fighting aircraft Antonov 32P has been in Montenegro since Tuesday, and two helicopters – contributed by Bulgaria and Switzerland – arrived in Montenegro on Wednesday. Two more fire-fighting aircraft will be deployed from Israel in the coming days.

NATO and EU discuss future cooperation at sea

Policy experts, diplomats and military representatives met on Friday (30 June 2017) to discuss maritime cooperation between NATO and the European Union. The meeting, hosted at Norway House in Brussels, was designed to draw lessons for future cooperation at sea, building on NATO-EU experience in countering piracy in the Indian Ocean and working side-by-side in the Mediterranean.

Chairman of the NATO Military Committee visits Romania and Exercise Saber Guardian

From 12-15 July 2017, General Petr Pavel, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee visited Romania where he met with the President, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, the Minister of National Defence, Mr. Adrian Țuțuianu, and the Chief of General Staff, General Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă. General Pavel also visited the NATO enhanced Air Policing Mission and observed the US-led multinational exercise Saber Guardian 17.

United States and Belgium safeguard the airspace of NATO’s Baltic Allies

For the next four months, the United States and Belgium will conduct NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, safeguarding the airspace over the region. At a ceremony on Tuesday (5 September 2017), Belgium took over the supporting role from Spain, operating out of Ämari, Estonia.

Exercise Dynamic Mongoose 2017

NATO-led exercise Dynamic Mongoose took place in the North Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Iceland. Participants were training anti-submarine warfare (ASW) interoperability and anti-surface capabilities.
