NEW TECHNOLOGY - Bentley CONNECT Edition creates common environment for project teams

Bentley's next generation software "completes the reach" to all project participants.

CONNECT Edition is a 'common environment' platform, superceeding V8i, enabling models to be more easily accessed and utilised across multiple model computing devices and operating systems.  It breaks new ground to support comprehensive project delivery, spanning design modelling, analytical modelling, and construction modelling, through a connected project experience.

CONNECT Edition:

  • intrinsically avails cloud-based capabilities throughout the software and services Bentley provide, to advance projects through a new "connected experience".
  • supports a hybrid environment across desktop modelling, cloud services and on-premises servers and mobile apps.
  • initially rolling out across ProjectWise, Navigator and MicroStation.
  • enables better performing products, therefore better performing infrastructure assets.
  • users attain full potential of BIM advancements for project delivery.

CONNECT Edition extends ProjectWise capabilities to the entire project ecosystem through:

  • ProjectWise Connection Services reaches all project participants to support cloud-based collaboration enabled through project profiles, authorizations, project playbooks, and learning paths.
  • ProjectWise Sharing Service allows cooperating organizations to federate their respective distributed ProjectWise environments.
  • ProjectWise Catalog Service supports project-specific catalogs of managed specifications and functional components.
  • ProjectWise WorkSite CONNECT Edition provides managed connectivity to the latest project documentation, with review and redlining capabilities for field workers.

NEW TECHNOLOGY - BlueCielo adds iPad app to access docs

The new BlueCielo Meridian Explorer app allows companies using Meridian Enterprise software to access and manage technical asset-related engineering documentation through an iPad app.  Users can:

  • search for and filter documents and assets and go to the associated assets or referenced documents
  • open Collection created in the full Explorer Client
  • show document/asset information
  • open a document in a third party app, to view content.

If you already have an existing Meridian Explorer Client license, make use of the Explorer app now.

NEW TECHNOLOGY-Need PLM for complex MCAD-ECAD?

Altium and Aras Partnership delivers Next Generation PLM for Complex MCAD-ECAD Environments.

ArasĀ®, the next leader in enterprise Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software, announced that Altium Limited, a global leader in Smart System Design Automation, 3D PCB design and embedded software development, has partnered with Aras to bring advanced ECAD PLM capabilities to the Aras solution suite.

Together, Altium and Aras will provide a new approach to fully integrated MCAD-ECAD PLM workflows for global companies with systems engineering requirements and complex mechatronic product development environments.

“In order to effectively manage the fusion of electronics and software with mechanical designs moving forward, global businesses need a new, more holistic approach,” said Jason Hingston, CTO of Altium. “We are partnering with Aras to provide the first truly seamless experience to multi-disciplinary development.”

“The development of next generation products combining electronics and software is resulting in greater complexity during design and manufacturing,” said Peter Schroer, President of Aras. “Altium’s perspective on the need to bring together the electronic and mechanical design processes aligns with ours, providing us the opportunity to jointly build better PLM processes for today’s modern manufacturers.”

SUCCESS STORY - Kiwis take it to London at Be Inspired Awards

New Zealand had 2 finalist entries in the Be Inspired Awards held at Bentley's 2014 Year In Infrastructure conference in London recently. These awards promote the extraordinary work of organisations that help sustain the world's infrastructure, as well as advance innovation and best practices in design, engineering, construction, operations and project delivery.

The two finalist 'Kiwi' entries were:

  • Well-Connected Alliance, The Waterview Connection, ProjectWise
    WON ITS CATEGORY.
Cameron Hyndman presented on the design & construction of a 4.8 km section of a 48km ring road around Auckland. The NZD$1.4 billion project includes 2.4 kms of tunnels bored 45 metres deep to avoid volcanic layers.  The result will reduce travel time and congestion, while improving network reliability and resilience.  Tunnel size and rock density presented extreme challenges for all involved. Using Bentley MXROAD and MicroStation for road design, tunnel modeling, and structural modeling greatly reduced design phase time. Using ProjectWise saved about NZD 500,000 in man-hours and reduced document control time to an absolute minimum.  Read more.

  • D&H Steel Construction, Westgate Footbridge, ProSteel
Congratulations making finalist - outdone by a 500m diameter Chinese radio-telescope!

Mike Thompson presented on the modelling of a unique footbridge in Waitakere, Auckland. The project was a 209metre long, 3metre wide, curved pedestrian and cycle bridge over a motorway built to address key safety issues and provide greater access to facilities. A footbridge model created in ProSteel served as the base to model, detail and fabricate a series of jigs then used to form the spirals and ensure the ends of the truss sections were accurate. The model was the primary source of accurate information allowing them to coordinate the precast concrete, foundations, handrails, throw screen and pedestrian lighting. This approach resulted in significantly reduced workshop man-hours and project delivery time.  Read more.

SUCCESS STORY - NOIC and URS correct pump damage using CFD

TRAIN/UPSKILL - Sell out Finite Element Analysis course! Book for May

Our Finite Element Analysis course in December is full.  Don't miss out on the next one scheduled 12th-13th May.

Matrix has been running Finite Element Analysis (FEA) courses for nearly 10 years and seen over 100 students benefit from this popular course covering the  practical aspects of using FEA.  It is a must for all engineers wishing to use FEA in real life applications.

  • Day 1 - Overview of the theory, capabilities and limitations of FEA and interpretation of FEA results.
  • Day 2 - More advanced topics including buckling, dynamics, contact, heat transfer, geometric and material non-linearities, and is focused on providing an understanding of how to tackle (or avoid) the more difficult analysis jobs.

Emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of developing and validating models to obtain sensible results.  Ample time is available for discussion and an extensive set of course notes is supplied.

TRAIN/UPSKILL - Understand Bentley's new subscription-based charges

Want a better understanding of Bentley's new SELECT Open Access Subscription basis?   Read how the calendar hour intervals effect usage reporting and charges.

Bentley established the calendar hour as a reporting internal in 2006, primarily as it's the fundamental unit of billable time used in distributed AECO workflows.  SELECT Open Access usage reporting is based on this calendar hour interval and charges are based on this.
